Foodie Saturday: Mulled Wine

First, a couple of answers:

Yes, Thanksgiving festivities distracted me from posting Foodie Friday on Friday.

No, it wasn’t because I was partaking in Black Friday shopping.  🙂

Now a question:

How was your Thanksgiving?

I hope you had a good one. I know I did, as evidenced by my lack of attention to all things Internet. It was nice to see family, eat decadently, and avoid homework. To celebrate this change in pace, I created my very first batch of mulled wine.

As I learned from my research, there are many ways to go about this warm and wintery beverage. I listed the spices I used below, but feel free to customize based on your own preferences. I also added a bit of liquor to punch things up. Completely optional, but quite delicious. Next time, I might go with an orange liquor.

Mulled Wine (a cozy beverage to enjoy with friends and family)

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 allspice berries
  • 5 cloves
  • dash of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. liquor (optional; I used anise-flavored liquor)
Combine all ingredients in a small pot over medium-high heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Let it just get to a boil, then turn the heat down to low and cook for about 30 minutes. Serve warm.
Happy Post-Thanksgiving!
